Genesis 1:5 Commentary

Genesis 1:5

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. (Genesis 1:5 )

Verse 5: The things receive their names as well as the being from God. The day is thine, the night also is thine: O that both may be for ever consecrated to his service and glory, and then whether we sleep or wake, we are the Lords. A glorious day! Nor finished without praise of admiring angels: these morning stars then sung together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy, Job 38:7. May my every day thus be closed with praise to him, who is so worthy to be had in remembrance. The first day of the world was the first day of the week also: the resurrection of Jesus on the same day hath made it doubly distinguished. Henceforth it is set apart to commemorate that yet more glorious work the new creation: this is the day the Lord hath made, and stamped with his own great name, “The Lord’s Day.” Re 1:10
